What is a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) and do I need it?
The UK GHIC replaced the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), when the UK left the European Union. If you have an existing EHIC it will remain valid until the expiry date shown on the card. Before it expires, you’ll need to apply for a UK GHIC to replace it (unless you meet certain criteria under the Withdrawal Agreement which allows you to apply for a new UK EHIC).
If you want to be able to access state-provided healthcare for free or at a reduced cost when you’re visiting an EU country or Switzerland, you’ll need a UK GHIC or UK EHIC. They are free of charge and valid for 5 years. Please note that, currently, a UK GHIC is not valid in Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, but this may change in the future.
For more information, Visit Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office or the NHS to find out how to apply and what you are eligible for.
